  • Adding or removing using accounts on your laptop.
  • Creating and changing passwords for other user accounts.
  • Changing access, names, photos and security of other user accounts.

It’s essential that you know your laptop’s administrative password; otherwise, you won’t be able to change files and settings, install programs, or troubleshoot issues.

Method 1: Using Control Panel

From your Windows Control Panel, click on “User Accounts” and then “User Account”. If it is an Administrator account, you will be able to see it right below your username.

Should You Change Your Administrator Account Name?

If you want to keep the built-in Administrator account active, you should give it a strong password and a new name. Because “Administrator” is the default account name, anyone with access to your computer knows right away that they may guess passwords using that login until you change it. Changing an account’s name is the equivalent of changing a password. It stops hackers from succeeding if their password-cracking software assumes the default name hasn’t been edited.

There are mainly four ways to change Administrator account name on your laptop. Follow the procedures provided below to change it.

Method A: Using Control Panel

  1. Press Windows + X key together and select Control Panel.
  2. After that, go to “User Accounts” and follow the steps described next.
  3. Select “Change your account name” from the available options.

  1. Press Windows + R together for opening the Run application.
  2. Type “lusrmgr.msc” in the run box and click “OK”.

  1. Press Windows key in your laptop for launching the Start menu.
  2. Type ‘cmd’ in the search option inside the Start menu in your laptop.
  3. Choose Run as Administrator by right-clicking on the Command Prompt item in the search result. If UAC prompts you, select Yes. To run this command, you must first open an elevated command prompt.
  4. The Command Prompt window will now open. After typing the following line of code, execute it. You should change ‘newName’ with the name you want to use.

  1. To launch the Run command, press Windows + R.
  2. Write “netplwiz” and hit Enter.
