Tables are one of the most useful features of Microsoft Word for making layout adjustments. Thanks to Microsoft Office, even the most elementary tables can be generated and formatted with relative ease. It’s possible to create a table with whatever number of rows, columns, and any customizations you choose. However, problems with resizing a table are possible. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why can’t I resize my table in Word?” then this piece is for you.

Issues With Resizing Table in Word

Issues With Resizing Table in Word

With any version of Word, you may modify the size and appearance of your table to your liking. Your inability to resize the table is not due to any one particular factor. There might be a number of reasons for this, including a frozen screen, a corrupted file, or a stuck system. If none of these applies, you may just be unfamiliar with the options accessible to you for adjusting the size of your table.

Using the right-click menu, navigate to Table Properties &, if it isn’t previously selected, go to the Table tab. If you want the window to remain its current size regardless of its contents, select the Options button, uncheck the item labeled “Automatically resize to fit contents,” and afterward press OK to dismiss the window.

Process of Sizing Table in Word

Each of the columns and rows in a table will be the same size by default when you initially create it. As more content is entered into the table, you may notice that certain rows or columns need to be expanded. Column and row lengths can be modified either by hand or automatically.

If you want to adjust the size of a table by hand, just select a row or column and drag it to the required size. You may accomplish this by grabbing the cell’s border and dragging it to the desired dimensions.

Resizing Rows

Altering the height of a row may be done in many ways: uniformly, automatically, or manually. Here are the measures to take in order to accomplish any of these:

  • Select an area of the table to work with.
  • Simply select the “Cell Size” category in the Layout submenu of “Table Tools” and then decide between the following options:
  • If any of your cells are blank, you may force the columns to adjust themselves to the surrounding writing or page boundaries by selecting AutoFit and then “AutoFit Contents.”
  • Choose “AutoFit Window” from the AutoFit drop-down list to make the table proportional to the content.
  • Use the upward and downward arrows to the right of the “Height” box to choose the desired row height. By choosing several cells, you may modify many rows at once.
  • By selecting Distribute Rows, you can ensure that each row has the same height.

As an alternative, you might make use of the Table properties.

  • Choose the row in the table whose height you wish to adjust.
  • Select Table, then Cell Height & Width to modify the dimensions of individual table cells.
  • Choose how you’d want the row height to be calculated in the box labeled “Height of Row.”
  • Set a value in the At dialogue box if you choose At Least row height and otherwise Exactly row height.
  • Finally, select the OK button.

Resizing Columns

You may make different-sized table columns the equal width or height. The Table Tools portion of the ribbon should now have a new tab titled Layout. Select the Columns to Distribute option.

With Auto Fit, columns may be automatically adjusted for optimal readability. You may accomplish this in the Layout section of your table. Click the “Auto Fit” button and choose a setting. The AutoFit menu provides three options.

When activated, AutoFit Contents will immediately adjust the size of the columns and rows to facilitate the information in the fields. The table’s columns will resize themselves to accommodate the additional material as you add it.

Selecting AutoFit Window will cause the table to expand or contract to fit the current window size. If you have AutoFit selected, picking Fixed Column Width will prevent the rows and columns from adapting to the additional information.

The Table properties will allow you to adjust the column width. Right-click the table & pick “Table Properties” from the list. Select the Columns section and specify the necessary parameters. Pick either Exactly or At least next to the specified box. Selecting “exactly” will lock the size, while “at least” will have the columns expand or contract based on their contents.

How to EXACTLY Change the Table Size in Word (row height, column width) Quickly

Conclusion

Depending on your needs, Microsoft Word may be used for a wide variety of content editing tasks. Each table you make may have its own unique combination of columns, rows, sub-columns, rows, etc. You may find yourself asking, “Why can’t I resize my table in Word?” Your difficulty should be simpler to resolve after studying this.
