How to Mute Text-to-Speech on Discord – A Step-by-Step Guide

Discord, a popular communication platform among gamers and communities, offers a wide range of features to enhance your online interactions. One such feature is Text-to-Speech (TTS), which allows messages to be read aloud by a computerized voice. While TTS can be useful in some situations, it can also be disruptive. If you’re looking to mute Text-to-Speech on Discord, you’ve come to the right place. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the process and help you regain control over your Discord server.

Understanding Text-to-Speech on Discord

Before we dive into the steps to mute Text-to-Speech on Discord, let’s take a moment to understand how this feature works. TTS is a tool that converts text-based messages into spoken words. When enabled, TTS reads out messages in voice channels, allowing users to listen to the content instead of reading it. While this feature can be helpful for some users, it can become a source of annoyance when overused or abused.

Why You Might Want to Mute Text-to-Speech

There are several reasons why you might want to mute Text-to-Speech on Discord:

  • Spam Prevention: TTS messages can be easily abused to flood voice channels with spam or offensive content. Muting TTS can help prevent such disruptions.
  • Disturbance Control: In larger Discord servers or busy voice channels, TTS messages can cause disturbances and interruptions during conversations.
  • Privacy: Some users may prefer to keep their messages private and not have them read aloud by the TTS feature.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get into the step-by-step guide on how to mute Text-to-Speech on Discord.

How to Mute Text-to-Speech on Discord

Launch Discord and Open Settings

First, make sure you’re logged into your Discord account and have the Discord application open on your computer. If you’re using the web version of Discord, ensure you’re logged in there as well. Once you’re logged in, click on the gear icon located at the bottom left of the Discord window. This icon represents your user settings.

Access Text & Images Settings

In the user settings menu, look to the left-hand sidebar. You’ll see a list of categories. Click on the category labeled “Text & Images.” This is where you can adjust various text and image-related settings, including Text-to-Speech.

Toggle Off “Allow playback and usage of /tts command”

Scroll down in the Text & Images settings until you find the “Allow playback and usage of /tts command” option. This option controls whether Text-to-Speech is enabled or disabled on your Discord account. To mute Text-to-Speech, simply toggle this option to the off position. Once it’s off, Text-to-Speech will no longer be available for your account.

Save Changes

After toggling off the Text-to-Speech option, make sure to save your changes. To do this, scroll back up to the top of the Text & Images settings and click the “Save Changes” button. Your settings will be updated, and Text-to-Speech will be muted on your Discord account.

How to Mute Text-to-Speech on a Discord Server

If you’re a server administrator or moderator and want to mute Text-to-Speech for the entire server, you can follow these steps:

Open Server Settings

  • While on the server where you want to mute Text-to-Speech, locate the server name at the top of the Discord window. Click on the server name to open the server menu.
  • In the server menu, select “Server Settings.” This will take you to the server’s settings page.

Access Roles

In the server settings, look to the left-hand sidebar. Click on the “Roles” category. Here, you can manage the roles and permissions for your server members.

Create or Edit a Role

You can either create a new role or edit an existing role to control Text-to-Speech permissions. To create a new role, click the “+” icon under the “Roles” section. To edit an existing role, click on the role’s name.

Adjust Text-to-Speech Permissions

Once you’re in the role settings, scroll down to the “Text Permissions” section. Here, you can find the permission related to Text-to-Speech. By default, the permission is set to “Use TTS.” To mute Text-to-Speech for users with this role, simply toggle off the “Use TTS” permission.

Assign the Role

After adjusting the Text-to-Speech permissions for the role, you’ll need to assign this role to the members you want to mute. To do this, go back to the server settings and click on “Members” in the left-hand sidebar. Find the member you want to mute and click the “+” icon next to their name to assign them the role you just edited.

Save Changes

Don’t forget to save your changes after assigning the role. The changes will take effect immediately, muting Text-to-Speech for the specified members on the server.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I mute Text-to-Speech for specific channels on a Discord server?

Currently, Discord does not offer a built-in feature to mute Text-to-Speech for specific channels. Muting Text-to-Speech can only be done at the user or server level.

Can I adjust the rate or voice of the Text-to-Speech feature on Discord?

Discord’s Text-to-Speech feature uses the default voice settings of your operating system. You can change the voice and rate of the Text-to-Speech feature by adjusting your system’s text-to-speech settings.

Why can I still hear Text-to-Speech even after muting it in my settings?

If you can still hear Text-to-Speech messages after muting the feature in your settings, it’s possible that the server you’re on has specific roles or permissions that override your personal settings. In such cases, you may need to contact a server administrator or moderator for assistance.
